Barend (Netherlands): Magical Mbeliling

The friendliest community

I have many fond memories of my too short visit to Mbeliling. From the first glimpse of the stunning blue-green coloured lake when we arrived in pouring rain. The road right on the edge of the lake with huge fig trees with aerial roots forming arcs over the road. Like even the trees wanted to make us feel welcome. On the lake there were millions of hovering dragonflies. Never saw anything like that before! And then the warm welcome in the village. It was a nice place to stay, with good food and everywhere friendly people. Just strolling through the village, we were invited to eat papayas, got an explanation about the cultivation and use of candle nuts and were invited to check out the hot water source. Everyone extremely friendly and relaxed (and no problem if you wanted some time for yourself). We hiked up the ridge to the stake-out point where you can oversee the lake and the village. Great views and a few nice birds were our reward. I can recommend a visit to Mbeliling to anyone who wants to see a truly magical place!
